for the birds...

my brother's team is out of the tournament, so today we drove 45 minutes southwest to myakka river state park... took an airboat tour to see the gators, but there weren't many about... the best part of the day was the bird walk, a 100' boardwalk out into the lake in a shallow area frequented by wading birds... for my first shot at shooting birds, or any wildlife, i think these are pretty good...

Those are some great shots Joe! What camera setup are you using again? I know it's a Nikon something. What about the lens? Really good work!

i've got a nikon d2h with a couple of lenses... everything here was shot with my christmas present to myself, the nikon 70-200 2.8 VR AF-S... the bird shots used that lens with a tc-20e 2x teleconverter and with the 1.5x multiplier you get with the nikon DX sensor size i ended up with the 35mm equivilent of a 600 5.6 when i'm zoomed out all the way...

these were all shot wide open at 600 with the camera set to an iso of 200 and were cropped a bit...

the 70-200 by itself is a beautiful lens, it's unbelievably sharp... not as good with the teleconverters, the sharpness doesn't suffer that much, but the out of focus highlights aren't as nice (bad bokeh)...

nice setup! the next big purchase i make is gonna be a similar lens for the canon. do you do much post-processing beyond cropping?

not a lot of post-processing... i use nikon capture to fix any color casts (i normally shoot with auto-white balance, which normally works pretty well), adjust exposure, and an unsharp mask if needed...

70-200 2.8s are great lenses, expensive and heavy, but beautiful pictures...
